Former Justice Secretary Leila de Lima  said she saw nothing wrong with inmates of the New Bilibid Prison displaying their talents while in detention, even if it would result in a record that even went platinum.

What De Lima found wrong in the case of inmate Herbert Colangco, or the artist known as Herbert C, was the conversion of his holding area or “kubol” into a music studio.

Huge speakers, a flat screen TV, a keyboard and even drum set were among the prohibited amenities found in Colangco’s kubol.

“Wala namang masama kung may mga talents sila, and they want to showcase their talent as part of the rehabilitation program ng correctional,” De Lima said in an interview in Manila.

Colangco managed to shoot several music videos at his kubol.

His “Kinabukasan” album under Ivory Music got gold and platinum PEP.ph reported.

The awards were certified and authenticated by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry, Inc. (PARI, inc.) based on the total units sold.

According to PARI, an album needs to sell 15,000 copies to be considered platinum.

“Ang kuwestyunable doon is nung nag-raid, may sarili siyang building at may mga music equipment. So VIP na naman iyon. Dapat common use iyon at hindi iyong sa kanya lang,” De Lima said.

Colangco’s kubol was among those raided by De Lima and a team from the National Bureau of Investigation on Monday. The surprise raid yielded hirdes of prohibited items from firearms and drugs to cash, gadgets and jewelry.

It was not the first time the public has witnessed how Filipino inmates could showcase their talents while in detention.

Around 1,500 inmates from the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center earlier became a global sensation thanks to their viral dance videos. Unlike Colangco’s however, the CPDR’s performances had proper authorization from officials.
