• 19-year-old slain student along with Atty. Bato reportedly 2 months pregnant
  • Police said she was just one of the lawyer’s many lovers
  • They have retrieved Bato’s cellphone, are analyzing messages for leads
MANILA, Philippines – At the wrong place and at the wrong time.
19-year-old Angelika Bonita, the high school student who was slain along with Atty. Rogelio Bato by unidentified gunmen last August 23, was reportedly two months pregnant with the deceased lawyer’s child.
The Bonita family, although denying any knowledge of Bato’s relationship with Angelika, suspect she may have been pregnant when she was gunned downed according to Bombo Radyo.
Albuera police chief, Chief Inspector Jovie Espinido said Bato maintained many relationships with women, Angelika being just one of them.
For his part, Tacloban City Police Office Director Sr. Supt. Rolando Bade said it was an open secret that the 19-year-old was Bato’s long-time companion.
At the same time, Bade said they have started gathering witnesses and analyzing the messages in Bato’s cell phone for any leads.
“We are not giving up on the investigation. In fact, we are still in the process of contacting people who could have witnessed the crime,” he told the Philippine Star. “We are still waiting whatever information na pwede natin magamit sa imbestigasyon [we can use for the investigation].”
Bato, the lawyer of Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa and his son suspected drug lord Kerwin, and Bonita were gunned down inside the former’s vehicle along Brgy. Lumbang 2 in Tacloban City.
Police earlier admitted that Bato was a ‘high-value’ target in the drug watchlist.
“He was on our drug watch list as a level 2 high value target. This means, mataas siya [he’s high up in the rankings]. He belongs to the Espinosa Drug Syndicate,” PRO-8 Regional Director Chief Supt. Elmer Beltejar said. “In all our custodial debriefing report, his name always appeared on the list.”
